USA TODAY story confirms city of Milwaukee rebounding
The week of April 17, 2006 the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the Milwaukee Public Policy Forum had found that the assessed values for all residential, commercial and industrial property within Milwaukee's city limits had risen nearly 12% in 2005. The story notes that these findings are “a reversal after decades of lagging tax trends in the city.”
The changing tide of the city of Milwaukee was also noted in an April 20, 2006 story in USA TODAY. The national paper reports on the findings of researchers at the University of Virginia which found that Milwaukee along with other industrial centers which are “labeled struggling cities because their populations keep shrinking...are greatly exaggerated.” The report found that while populations may be declining “the per-capita income of residents went up compared with those in the suburbs - a sign that smaller populations don't necessarily mean cities are dying.”
