Federal Reserve economist portrays Milwaukee as a winner
On April 27, 2006 the Wisconsin State Journal ran a story about remarks before a Wisconsin legislative committee that were made by Richard Mattoon, senior economist for the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago. In his comments Mattoon referred to Wisconsin’s economy as being the “top dog” in the Midwest.
Turning attention to Milwaukee, the Wisconsin State Journal wrote that “Milwaukee's increasing economic interdependence on Chicago, as the Illinois suburbs continue to shift north and some companies even look to relocate in search of cheaper real estate and labor.” The paper went on to quote Mattoon as saying Milwaukee’s “fate is more closely tied to that of Chicago, and maybe that's a good thing." Mattoon added, "So far, Milwaukee's a winner."
