GQ: American Club one of 10 Hippest Hotels in the world
Just north of Milwaukee is one of the 10 Hippest Hotels in the world according to GQ magazine as it has named Kohler's The American Club the "Best Chance To Tee It Up Like A Pro." As part of GQ's February 2004 edition is a feature entitled "10 Hotels Worth the Journey" and is described as the "world's most decadent dwellings." Here is what GQ had to say about The American Club:
Chances are you're not searching for America's finest bathrooms when you consider vacation dwellings. You should be. That way you'd end up at the American Club. Built in 1918 as a dormitory for immigrant factory workers who came here to make, well, porcelain facilities, it has become, over the past two decades, one of the finest golf resorts in the world.
The Club offers four immaculate Pete Dye-designed courses, including the rugged Whistling Straits, home of the 2004 PGA Championship. The water is Lake Michigan, and no, you can't see across it, which makes it as good as the ocean. Bluer, too. Caddies imported from Ireland with handicaps lower than yours, a nice flock of black-faced sheep on the course for verisimilitude, sand dunes, beaches, sand traps you can't see out of-the best links-style golf this side of Carnoustie.
When you've finished your round, join the wife for a couple's massage and cavort in every copper tub, shower, whirlpool and waterfall Kohler Co. makes. The resort also offers a "golfer's foot renewal," which you'll need because you'll be walking a good deal. No carts allowed.
