Milwaukee region strongly represented in 2006 Fortune 500 list
The April 17, 2006 issue of Fortune magazine includes their annual listing of the Fortune 500, the largest corporations in the United States.
The Milwaukee region continues to have eight companies included in this prestigious list but with one company breaking into the Fortune 500 list while another one drops slightly below the cutoff. Brookfield based Fiserv joined the list as it ranked 488 in 2006 up from 510 in 2005. The other companies included in the Fortune 500 are Johnson Controls (75), Milwaukee; Northwestern Mutual (116), Milwaukee; Manpower (136), Milwaukee; Kohl's (166), Menomonee Falls; Harley-Davidson (380), Milwaukee; Rockwell Automation (427), Milwaukee and Marshall & Ilsley Corp. (499), Milwaukee. Wisconsin Energy, based in Milwaukee, dropped from 471 in 2005 to 510 in 2006.
Expanding the list to the Fortune 1000 the Milwaukee region adds not only Wisconsin Energy but seven other companies including: JohnsonDiversey (577), Sturtevant; Briggs & Stratton (655), Milwaukee; Snap-On (720), Kenosha; Joy Global (827), Milwaukee; A.O. Smith (901), Milwaukee; Modine Manufacturing (948), Racine and MGIC Investment (956), Milwaukee.
When looking at the number of Fortune 500 companies within the confines of a city, with six corporations Milwaukee has the same number of Fortune 500 companies as San Francisco and Pittsburgh and outpaces the five corporations in each of the following cities: Cleveland, Columbus, Denver, Omaha, San Antonio and Seattle.
