As telecommunications and transportation make the world smaller, businesses are rapidly tapping into international markets. Wisconsin companies exported more than $10.5 billion in goods and services in 2000, up 9% over 1999. The top six categories were machinery and mechanical appliances; optical, photographic, measuring and medical instruments; electrical machinery and parts; vehicles; paper and paperboard; and plastics.
